Thermo-active building components (TABS) actively integrate the solid structure of the building in the temperature management system.

The best solution is to insert pipe lattices into the ceilings and / or walls of each storey, which can be charged and / or discharged by circulating a warmer or cooler fluid through the pipes. Only a small temperature difference relative to room temperature is needed. For cooling the TABS extract heat from the room, while for heating they emit heat to the room.

It is therefore possible to use renewable or environmentally friendly energy to offset that supply/demand imbalance by, for example, using cool ground water or the cooler temperatures in the ground under and around the building to supply cold water (16-19 °C) which is fed into the pipe lattice in the ceiling to cool it. During the day, heat is absorbed from the room via the ceiling, air-conditioning the space.

The day/night temperature variations are used in the way that the delay in the storage process balances the time differences that exists between supply and demand.

The specific cooling capacities are up to about 42 W/m2 in case of a bare ceiling, or up to about 35 W/m2 in case of a ceiling with suitable thermal acoustic panels.

Comfortable Room Climate

Heat (cold) is transferred by radiation. For the user this is the most pleasant method of conveying heat / cold. People in the room are not affected at all by the air that is being warmed / cooled by radiation, since the surrounding surfaces are cooler than body temperature.

Because large surfaces are available for heat exchange in hydronic radiant cooling systems (usually almost the whole ceiling or walls), the coolant temperature is only slightly lower than the room temperature.
