2008 has seen new models of LED lamps appearing which can replace the existing conventional lamps, earlier as predicted by many light bulb producers.

Using LED lamps in home lighting not only saves on power bills, but is also one of the safest and most eco-friendly home lighting options available today.

The use of LED lighting is expanding rapidly for a number of reasons, although the upfront cost per unit of LEDs versus traditional light bulbs is higher, the maintenance and operating costs of LED lighting is usually much lower. After the installation time and labor is no longer required for changing light bulbs, and money is saved from the reduced amount of electricity used for lighting.

There is already wide spread use of LED traffic signs and LED headlights where a premium is placed on a reliable light source that is cheaper and less labor intensive to maintain. LED lighting will be used to replace virtually every type of light, bulb, and lamp that is currently in use.

LED lighting has convincing advantages:

  • Low Power consumption
The key strength of LED lighting is its much reduced power consumption. Using only 2 - 4 watts of energy, none of it is wasted generating heat. Switching to LED lighting can save up to 95% on electricity costs. With less heat in the room, your air-conditioning works much less too.
  • Long Lifetime
LEDs don't break very easily, and have a very long lifetime. Traditional white bulbs may have an expected lifetime of 1,000 hours, but you get up to 50,000 hours out of an LED - or even more.
  • Environmentally friendly
LED lighting reduces your carbon footprint immensely.
Mercury-free - LEDs do not contain mercury or halogen gases, unlike flourescent lamps. (Flourescent lamps and the usual energy saving lamps should get disposed to hazardous waste only.)
  • Low maintenance
LEDs reduce the need to replace failed lamps - more cost saving.
  • Instantaneous switch-on
LEDs light up immediately, even when cold, unlike ballast driven starters.
  • small size
The small sizes of LED lamps provide design flexibility. LED's can be physically smaller than incandescent lamps with similar brightness.
  • Solid state
Compared to incandescent lamps, LED lamps are much more rugged mechanically. Light is produced by a solid state chip that usually is encapsulated in solid epoxy. There is no filament to break or burn out.
  • Brilliant colors
LED lighting provides outstanding results in colored lighting and accent lighting, delivering truer and more brilliant colors than any less-efficient lighting methods do.
  • Radiation free
LEDs have no infra-red (warmth) or ultra-violet emissions, making them ideal for specialist applications i.e. museums, Art galleries, food display or fridge lighting.

A normal light bulb is not very efficient, only 5%, and it only lasts about 750 to 1,000 hours in normal use. A compact fluorescent lights (CFL) can last 15,000 hours. An LED lasts 50.000 - 100.000 hours. That is at least 50 times the lifespan of a light bulb, and 5 times and more the lifespan of a CFL.

An advantage over CFLs which will become more and more important is that CFLs are hazardous waste, but LEDs are not.

LED lamps can also replace halogen spotlights, resulting in 90% energy saving and a 50 times longer lifespan.

Currently the price of LED lamps is still higher than the price of CFL lamps, however due to the small energy consumption of 1 - 4 Watt per lamp only, and the much longer life expectancy creates running costs savings which are paying back the investment quickly.

Our LED lamps come in candle or golf ball bulb shape, either with a E27 or E14 Edison screw or with SBS B15d and SBS B22d.

The LED spotlight models have a MR16 socket with a bi-pin base or a GU10 bayonet socket.

LED lighting has the welcome side effect of reducing the connected load at the public grid signifi- cantly, which will offset the investment costs of real estate projects. A strong contribution to reducing the CO2 production and protecting the climate.
